Terms Everyone Should Know About Their Teeth!

    Last updated 5 years ago

Caring for your teeth is an essential part of living a long, healthy life. In addition to going to the dentist, it is important for everyone to maintain their smiles by brushing, flossing, and using mouthwash every day. If you are confused about some words your pediatric dentist uses to describe your child’s teeth, it may be time to brush up on your vocabulary. The following are terms everyone should know:

Fixed Appliances: No, this term does not refer to the refrigerator! Instead, “fixed appliance” is another way to describe semi-permanent devices attached to the teeth, such as braces. Traditional braces are bonded to the front of teeth in order to straighten and align problem areas through months or years of orthodontic therapy.

Gingivitis: Gingivitis is the first stage of gum disease, which is triggered by bacteria inside the mouth. Gingivitis causes inflammation of the gum tissue and may even progress to tooth loss if the connective matter around the teeth is damaged.

Local Anesthesia: Like the name suggests, this type of pain-numbing medication is applied only to the area that needs numbing. When it comes to the teeth, a dentist may use a local anesthetic while filling cavities or performing other minor procedures. Serious surgery may require patients to receive a general anesthetic, which allows for total unconsciousness.

Primary Teeth: You may know primary teeth, or deciduous teeth, better as “baby teeth.” Around the age of 6, most children will begin to lose their primary teeth as they are replaced with permanent teeth. Healthy baby teeth set the foundation for healthy mature teeth throughout adulthood.

In the early years of a child’s life, trips to the dentist may involve everything from fluoride treatments to lessons in brushing. The best way to handle changes in your children’s teeth is to find a trusted pediatric dentist. Instilling good oral hygiene habits is an essential part of raising healthy children. This video explores the ways in which parents can ensure that their kids have the healthiest teeth possible.

Up until kids are eight or nine years old, many do not have the motor skills to brush their teeth unassisted. While toddlers may start brushing as early as age two, parents should monitor their progress and reach any areas the child may have missed. The same goes with flossing, which many kids cannot properly perform until age 10 or 11. Click play to learn more tips for protecting your loved ones’ teeth.
